Kastro, Sifnos
The traditional settlement of Kastro in Sifnos
Kastro, the living museum of Sifnos
Kastro is one of the most charming and historic settlements in Sifnos. Built on the eastern side of the island, atop a steep rock, it overlooks the endless blue of the Aegean. From antiquity to today, this settlement has preserved its medieval structure and unique charm.
As you approach, the view of Kastro suddenly appearing at a turn in the road is breathtaking. The downhill route from Apollonia (about 3.5 km) gives you the feeling of entering a place where time has stopped.

Architecture and unique structure
Kastro was the ancient capital of Sifnos and still retains the characteristics of the Venetian fortress built around 1635 by the Da Corogna dynasty.
- The old gateway-archways, the "loggias," which once protected the village like defensive towers, remain the main entrances to the settlement.
- The houses on the outer ring are built closely together, forming a natural protective wall.
- The narrow, stone-paved streets, small bridges connecting different levels, and houses with wooden balconies and old family crests at their entrances transport you centuries back in time.
- Near the center of the settlement, you’ll find the church of Agios Ioannis Theologos, in front of which lies the only square in Kastro.
If you love cats, Kastro will feel like paradise! You’ll spot them lounging in courtyards, on stone benches, and rooftops, basking in the sun and enjoying the peaceful atmosphere of the village.
Museums and culture
Hidden within the village's alleys, you’ll find the Archaeological Museum of Sifnos. Small yet fascinating, it houses artifacts from excavations across the island, offering a glimpse into its ancient past.
The old primary school of Kastro no longer functions as a school but hosts art, photography, and painting exhibitions during the summer.

Food, coffee & shopping
Exploring Kastro’s alleys will make you want to stop and soak in the atmosphere! Sit at one of the small cafés to enjoy loukoumades or a rich breakfast, browse the elegant little shops for gifts, jewelry, and handmade crafts—perfect souvenirs to take a piece of Sifnos with you. And when hunger strikes, visit one of the taverns and meze restaurants serving exceptional flavors.
Magical sunset-time moments
If you visit Kastro in the late afternoon toward sunset, the experience will be unforgettable. The orange-purple hues of the sky make the landscape even more mesmerizing. This is the perfect time to descend the steps to the chapel of the Seven Martyrs. Yes, there are quite a few steps, but the reward is unparalleled—the sensation of being surrounded by the sea, floating in the colors of the sunset.
After your stroll, if you want to unwind, sit at one of the village’s bars, sip a refreshing wine or cocktail, and let the magic of Kastro enchant you.
Seralia: The old port and small beach
To the south of Kastro, you’ll find Seralia, the ancient port of Sifnos. Here, there is a small pebble beach, while the more adventurous prefer to dive from the small pier.
If you’re hungry, the fish taverns in the area serve fresh local seafood and creative dishes right on the rocks, with an endless view of the Aegean.
