The Archaeological Site of Agios Andreas (on the road to Vathi)

sifnos archaeological sites | ancient acropole in Sifnos islandSifnos is one archaeological monument, since the island has been inhabited since the Neolithic era (7000-3000 B.C.). On the road from Apollonia or from Katavati to Vathi, you shall meet the monastery of Fyrogia and after a while on your right there is the hill of Agios Andreas with the homonymous church on its top, which has been built in 1701.

The climbing to the top is not at all tiring, and it takes about 25 minutes and it is realized through a narrow spiral path. The view from the highest spot of the hill is magic and it makes it up to who decides to visit it. Here, there is one of the most important archaeological sites of Sifnos. The archaeological findings here show that the place has been constantly inhabited from the Mycenaean to the Hellenistic times. The excavations have brought into light a big part of the Mycenaean wall of the 12th century B.C. in that wall there are ruins of five buildings, which were possibly residences.

The site is open every day except Monday and Holidays, from 8.30 in the mornig until 3 the noon.
